But the true nature of the BS Flag is much more elusive. Its an ice-breaker with an ugly blind date. Its a conversation starter when youre asking for an overdue raise. It's a harmless political message sent to your elected representative with a note that says "Keep up the good work!" What should I do with the BS Flag? The BS Flag is not meant to be a load-bearing projectile, a dueling glove, a weapon of mass destruction, cannon fodder, or a replacement for cloth diapers. Otherwise, you can pretty much do what you want with it. Most people throw it at someone (or something) that bugs them.Just make sure whomever you throw the BS Flag at knows why you're doing it and what it means. We cant stress this enough. The point of throwing the BS Flag is to enable you to speak up and hopefully resolve an issue. So not telling someone why you flagged them or what it means to be flagged is wrong, and stupid, and not likely to achieve anything unless your goal is to be an annoying jerk. When should I throw the BS Flag?If you see, hear, taste, touch, smell, or psychically perceive something you think is wrong, throw the BS Flag. Literally, figuratively, it doesn't matter. What matters is that you throw it and get the problem out in the open. You can't ignore it anymore. They can't ignore it anymore. A dialogue ensues. If youre lucky, you come up with a solution together. At the very least, you've taken a crack at denial, apathy, fear whatever it is that keeps you from speaking up.Need more ideas about when to throw the BS Flag? See BS in the News. Are You Full of Bull (Take the BS Test)Often the people who call bullshit the most are the most full of it themselves. Usually this type of person is self-centered, narcissistic and has a pathological need to be right all the time. Also, this person would rather stay the same than change in any way that might be for the better.Could this person be you? Ask yourself these questions:
Are you a bullshit artist? The bullshit artist is a master of superior thought and emotional control tactics learned at a very young age. The bullshit artist knows how to wield information and circumstances to garner support for an agenda. Usually the bullshit artist knows the truth but hides it or shapes it to fit an agenda. Sometimes the BS artist is indifferent to how that hiding and shaping causes pain to others; this is known as a "sociopathic bullshit artist."Are you smothered by bullshit? These are folks who, poor creatures, can't keep up with the world in a Darwinian sense. They're so overwhelmed, full of fear and emotionally submissive that they're doomed to fall for the bullshit. Sure, you dont want to be a "poor creature," but pay attention, be real and admit it if this is you.Are you bullshit averse? When you're constantly pointing out the "catches" and exposing lies and mistruths, you're probably bullshit averse, or at least bullshit resistant. You might even be a bullshit buster, and you might even be a Big Bullshit Buster, like Elliot Spitzer or Gandhi (not to say theyre comparable in any way, or not comparable). So take the test; this one should be quick:Are you bullshit neutral?Do you not care about any of this? Is the whole conversation boring? Do you feel pretty healthy and happy about your everyday life? Have you never had any real complaints? Has no one ever made you mad or violated your rights in some way? If they did, did you forgive them with joy immediately? If so, congratulations! You are exempt from bullshit or from having to deal with bullshit.
